This page describes the various documents located in the directory named /pub/Computer-Music-Journal on the Internet ftp server mitpress.mit.edu at MIT. These files can be accessed via the World-Wide Web, Internet ftp file transfer, or the gopher protocol; they are available to anyone provided that the copyright notices included in them are maintained.
The paragraphs below describe the contents of the Computer Music Journal archives and provide WWW hypertext pointers for viewing the various documents stored there. For a general description of Computer Music Journal and subscription information, look at this document.

The subdirectories within the Computer Music Journal archives include several types of documents. These are described in the sections of this document, which also provides hypertext links to many popular music-related WWW documents.

There are also several flavors of on-line index files for the Computer Music Journal Archives. There is a recursive listing of the files in UNIX "ls -lR" format in the file ls-lR in the top-level directory. A README file is an ASCII version of this document. Computer Music Journal (CMJ) is a quarterly Journal that covers a wide range of topics related to digital audio signal processing and electroacoustic music. It is published (as hard copy) by MIT Press and is now in its 20th year. The topics addressed in Computer Music Journal include:
- software and hardware for digital audio signal processing;
- electroacoustic, electronic, and computer music;
- software for music notation, printing, and archival systems;
- music representation languages and music cognition;
- new physical performance interfaces;
- sound localization and 3-D sound spatialization;
- sound in computer user interfaces and virtual realities;
- aesthetics of contemporary music, and other areas.
Each issue of Computer Music Journal is between 100 and 140 pages and includes:
- Editor's Notes, letters, and discussions of recent topics;
- news and announcements relevant to the computer music community;
- five or more feature articles--technical or aesthetical essays, tutorials, surveys, or interviews;
- five or more reviews of events, recordings, publications, and products; and
- extensive new product announcements.
The editors of Computer Music Journal also produce a CD once a year with musical and sound
examples related to Journal articles. These CDs are available separately from the CMJ subscription.
